How to get to Sapa from Hanoi to explore its beautiful landscapes

Sapa is a bout 380km far from Hanoi which is time consuming trip whichever route you take by train or car transfer.There are two ways to get to Sapa from Hanoi : the railway & roadway.Basing on your travel schedules & travel budgets, so you can choose your proper way from Hanoi to Sapa.

Travel Hanoi-Sapa by an overnight train

In the past ( before October 2014), most of visitors choose overnight trains to get to Sapa.It is more comfortable, safer than buses and much cheaper than renting a private car. At Hanoi main railway station, there are some Hanoi-Sapa trains leaving between 8h00p.m and 10h00 p.m and arrive in Lao Cai station – the last stop in the journey at between 4h30 a.m and 6h00 a.m.  At Lao Cai station, you need to travel 35km up hills by public buses ( 60.000 vnd/person) or by  private taxi ( 350.000 vnd/4 seater car) to reach Sapa destination. The return train journey Lao Cai- Hanoi departs between 19h30 p.m and 21h30 p.m in even number trains ( SP2, SP4, SP8..).For a cheap budget with local interesting experience, you can choose hard seats or soft seats like locals.

For a comfortable sleeping on a soft-sleeper berth in a  private, clean and fully-equiped 4 bed cabin with air-conditioning, you can select private carriage operators such as Sapaly, Hoa Phuong, Tulico, King Express, Fansipan…..etc.Those train tickets are mainly distributed through travel agents so you need to book with travel agents in advance to make sure of the availability.Please, take a notice that overnight train could be a nice experience, saving travel time as well as your hotel nights, but many people find it hard to get proper sleep due to the train noise, its regular stops between the journey as well as its early drop-off in the morning.Then you will feel tired & hard to enjoy beautiful Sapa trekking tours during the day.

Get to Sapa from Hanoi by public buses or express buses or private car

If you can't book a train ticket or you like a cheaper way, so you can choose sleeper buses or express Hanoi-Sapa-Hanoi buses. Firstly, you can take  sleeper buses named Hung Thanh & Hai Van at My Dinh, Gia Lam bus station, and in 8-9 hours you will get to Sapa from Hanoi directly.Secondly, you can reach Sapa directly by Hanoi- Sapa express buses, departing at 7h00 a.m from Hanoi old quarter with the cost form 250.000 vnd-300.000 vnd/ one way and you arrive in Sapa after 6 hour drive via a new-built Noibai-Lao Cai highway.

However, thanks to a new-operated Noibai –Lao Cai highway in 2014,many of tourists have chosen private car transfer with driver to get to Sapa from Hanoi.It is more flexible and professional.
