The history of Long Bien Bridge

The Long Bien Bridge – formerly known as the Paul Doumer Bridge – was one of the greatest engineering accomplishments of the French colony and a showpiece of colonial infrastructure. In the Vietnam War it became a symbol of Hanoi’s resistance to relentless US bombing.

Hanoi Travel Guide-Long Bien Bridge1

Designed by French Architect Gustave Eiffel of Eiffel Tower fame, Long Bien Bridge was completed in 1902 when it was one of the longest bridges in Asia. A beloved Hanoi landmark, this cantilever bridge provides stunning views across the Red River if you’re adventurous enough to brave the potholes. Long Bien Bridge is mercifully closed to Hanoi’s notorious car traffic.

More than 3,000 Vietnamese lent their skills to the building of Long Bien Bridge. Until North Vietnam’s independence in 1954 the bridge was known as Paul Doumer Bridge, in honour of the Governor General of French Indochina. During the American War the bridge was heavily bombed due to its strategic placement in connecting Hanoi to the port city of Hai Phong.
