Hoan Kiem lake, also largely known among Vietnamese as " Sword Lake" is a beautiful freshwater lake in the center of Hanoi city. There is an interesting story behind its name Hoan Kiem. Legend has told us that Le Than, a fisherman caught a metal bar when he went fishing, then offered this bar to the General Le Loi who united Vietnamese to fight against Chinese domination ( Minh dynasty) in 15th century for the country's freedom & independence.Le Loi found the metal bar engraved with two words " Thuan Thien" meaning " Harmonious to the Heaven" and ordered to transform it into a sword to use in the battle.Le Loi won the war & regained the peace back to Vietnam.Le Loi became the king and located the capital in Hanoi. One year after winning the war, the King did a dragon boat cruising around the lake.Suddenly, there was a golden turtle surfaced and asked the King for the return of the sword.Think about the past when the nation was at war, the golden turtle (genius) did help him with the weapon, now the country was at peace, the golden turtle would get the sword back.King Le Loi threw the sword at the tortoise, who immediately grabbed it and went under the water. From then, the lake got its name changed from Luc Thuy ( Blue Water) lake to Hoan Kiem ( Sword Returned) lake.
