Vietnam is a communist country, recently opened its border to promote trade & tourism with the rest of the world in 1986 by “Open Door Policy”.In the past, our second languages are Russian or Chinese which were largely taught in most of schools.Then English was replaced and firstly taught as the second language in a large scale in 1994 when Vietnam actually carried out the market-oriented economy.Oversea business men tried to open their company’s branches in Vietnam, foreign tourists entered Vietnam to explore its beautiful & natural landscapes. Hence, there are increasing demands of local labours who could use English for communication in Vietnam ( speaking & listening skills).
Leaning English in schools with grammars ( reading & writting skills)
However, English has not been training properly in most of schools, only limited in reading & writing skills with grammar rules & vocabularies, and no speaking & listening skills at all.Students are excellent in grammar rules, they master a big volume of vocabularies, know how to pronounce the words and put then into sentences, but they can't speak them out for effective communication.They are afraid of English comunication in general.As the results, majority of Vietnamese population can’t use English properly for communication, except for the ones (a small number ) who got training in gifted schools or universities specialized in foreign languages.After more than twenty years of economy reforms, the number of population who can speak English, have increased, but are still small in percentage comparing with the population.When you travel to Vietnam, you can find it easy to speak English with locals such as hotel receptionists, restaurant staffs or tourguides or shop sellers…. in touristic areas of big cities.
