What an interesting coincidence with my travel business schedules to the central & southern Vietnam, so I took part in their 9 day business trip and assisted them with interpretation on the farmers’s field visits & at the table meetings with local processing factories in Vietnam ( in central highland provinces such as Dac Nong, Da Lat & Gia Lai; in the northern Vietnam to Son La province; and in southern Vietnam provinces of Long An, Tien Giang & Can Tho).

In fact, the interpretation in this agricultural field of passion fruits is totally new to my knowledge but I tried to gain as much as possible about it from the internet before the trip and did a successful job to support our customers achieving their goals and having their great understanding of Vietnam’s emerging market about this new fruit tree – Passion Fruit in Vietnam. For me, it is a trip of valuable experiences about passion fruits, the suitatable areas for planting this fruit and the companies doing the business about it in Vietnam. The passion fruit and good locations to plant this tree in Vietnam
Passion fruit is quite a new fruit tree in Vietnam and popularly planted in the central highland provinces of Dac Nong, Gia Lai, Lam Dong, Kon Tum; and in the northern mountainous province of Son La – Moc Chau region – where are considered as good locations of the fertile ground and the perfect weather condition for planting passion fruit trees ( pleasant weather condition- neither so hot nor so cold with moderate rainfalls – important factors for high yield of the passion fruit crops).
The seedling can be accessably bought in Vietnam or imported from Taiwan through some local seedling agents.The main passion fruits planted in Vietnam are in purple passion fruits which have better flavors & higher brix than yellow ones commonly planted in South American countries.Arcording to local farmers, purple passion fruits are more fruitful and juicy, bringing up with higher economic income for them yearly in a two year tree life circle.

The investment for a hectar of passion fruit plantation is ranging from 7000 usd to 9000 usd for seedling,fertilizers, metal frame for the trees to creeping on.It can be planted between 600 and 800 trees in one hecta.Compared with other trees,it is quite a big investment but Mr Than- a local farmer in Son La said that he loved planting this tree because this tree makes flowers and fruits all year around so he could pick up the fruits everyday and sell in good price
The price is quite fluctuated and so much depending on China’s market currently.Farmers will sell their fruits to middle man or dealers and mostly export to China market.When farmers pick up the fruits, they classify into three types : type A – the best ones for EU market; type B – for China market or fresh market in Vietnam ; type C- supplying for local processing factories in Vietnam making concentrated products for exporting to US or EU markets.
Processing factories of passion fruits in Vietnam
In this business trip, I also learn that there are an increasing number of big companies which are doing a big investment to build up their modern technology factories to process concentrated passion fruit products and export their products to EU markets.Some of these companies do their own close channeled systems with their own seedling, fertilizers, planting technologies applied for their own plantations, then processing the products in their invested factories – that is a good way to control the quality of their raw materials, then their final products.In other hands, other companies build up their own factories and cooperate with local farmers for raw materials basing on their mutually contracted prices to make sure their long – termed partnership.It is a win-win approach for farmers and the factories so the price & plantation scales will be much more stable and less affected by China’s market demands.
