The Mythical & Moving Legend of Dai Yem waterfall
Aside from its natural beauty, Thac Dai Yem is also renowned for its mythical and romantic allure : “Legend has it that in the past, there were foreign invaders in neighboring Laos. With the friendship between Vietnam and Laos, the young men of Ban Vat volunteered to go to the neighboring country to help. At that time, there was a young couple from the Thai ethnic group who loved each other very deeply. Before leaving, the young man and his girlfriend said goodbye to each other on the top of the waterfall and promised that when he returned after defeating the enemy, he would marry her…
After the enemy was defeated, the young men from Ban Vat returned, but the girl’s boyfriend was nowhere to be found. Every day, she would climb to the top of the waterfall to wait for him. Although some young men from the village expressed interest in her, she refused them all, remaining faithful to the promise and oath of love between her and her boyfriend.
One day, the girl was waiting nearby the waterfall and unfortunately slipped and fell down. The villagers searched for her but could not find her, only finding a strip of cloth (dải yếm) hanging on a tree branch, which was embroidered with the names of the young man and the girl. From then on, the people of the village called this waterfall “Dai Yem” to symbolize the iron-clad love between the young couple.”
With that moving story, Thac Dai Yem has become a symbol of love now, and couples often visit the waterfall to pledge their affection to each other.
