Ha Giang attractions exploration with motobike adventure

Our amazing motorbike adventure to explore great Ha Giang attractions

Having heard of beautiful Ha Giang landscapes & its hard roads to reach this land from some of our drivers who did this travel route many times before made me curiously about this destination and motivated me taking a trip to Ha Giang province one day.We did this Ha Giang excursion of 3 nights/ 2 days last weekends with an ever-lasting feeling till now and would like to share about Ha Giang landscapes & our recent motorbike adventure to discover Ha Giang attractions

The map route to visit up-northern area of Ha Giang province

Ha Giang province is located the northeast of Vietnam, sharing its border with China up-northern point.Ha Giang city is 300 km far from Hanoi and takes you at least 6-7 hours reach the capital city of this mountainous province. However, the most beautiful sceneries of Ha Giang province are located in up-northern districts such as Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, Meo Vac & Hoang Su Phi with impressive views of high mountains, deep valleys, waterfalls & remote local villages.Together with its amazing landscapes, those northern districts are challenging us with high & winding passes for your special feeling of adventures & conqueration ! At the end, you will be rewarding with spectacular captivation, great insights of local cultures and conquer yourselves in a long journey overcoming this pass to another one !

Night 1 : Overnight bus with solf- sleeper bed Hanoi to Ha Giang city. Overnight on bus !

Getting useful travel information advices of Ha Giang attractions, we chose to reach Ha Giang city by an overnight bus from Hanoi with soft-sleeper beds – comfortable for a long journey with an overnight sleep on bus. We selected Bang Phan bus at their own parking station, leaving Hanoi at 21h30 and reaching Ha Giang city in early moring of 5h00 am at Ha Giang bus station. The bus journey was quite comfortable and we slept well on it with a good dream of our journey conquering Ha Giang beauty ahead.

Day 1 : Motorbike adventure Ha Giang city to its highlighted attractions of Quang Ba town- Yen Minh town – Lung Cu flag tower & Dong Van town. Night 2. Homestay overnight in Dong Van town

Near Ha Giang bus station, the bus conductor awoke us up to get down and we were going to finish the bus journey.Looking through the car’s window, I saw water drops on the window. I just thought it was water drops from AC bus due to the differences in temperature between inside & outside the car.In fact,it was raining like cats & dogs when we got out of the car. How crazy this weather would be for our coming motorbike adventure to up-northern districts of Ha Giang province ! It was unsafe to do this motorbike journey under this rain along mountain roads with high passes and regular landslides happening there ! I asked someone at the bus station, they said that it was raining here almost a month till now and it could be the same some days ahead.A quick thought in my mind that we would change our plan and caught local buses to Dong Van & Meo Vac !

We sat at Ha Giang bus station for a while considering what a smart choice to take. My partner just said to cancel the adventure and came back to Hanoi. I didn’t accept that idea with my confidence of coming better weather ! After one hour waiting,my trust became true ( the rain turned to be less & less, then it stopped completely ).

Ha Giang attractions to visit with motobike

Adventure to vist Ha Giang landscapes by motobike

We walked to a nearby restaurant for breakfast & coffee and rephoned to Ms Giang – a local person who rent us a motorbike for two days (we contacted her in advance from Hanoi for the cost & journey). After signing a contract & some deposit to Ms Giang, we got a really new geared motorbike, filled up with petroleum at the fuel station nearby and started our adventure journey up to Quang Ba Pass, Yen Minh, Vuong Palace, Lung Cu flag tower & Dong Van town- journey to explore famous Ha Giang attractions ( 200km to go on the first day)

Following the national road 4C, we felt very awesome when the sun came out – nicer for the view & better to drive up to the highlands.I was with some good experiences of motorbike travelling to Mu Cang Chai ( passing Khau Pha pass), this adventure to Ha Giang’s northern districts would be another amazing experience for me as well. After 10km on the flat road, we started driving up & up on many winding passes challenging us by a number of narrowly-curved areas with mountains on one side & deep valleys on another side; and in some road distances effected by recent landslides stopping the way with dirts & stones. My partner was scaring & sweating not because of the sun’s heat but his afraid feeling of road terrains & danger. However, we kept going on and reached the top of Quan Ba Pass after 45km from Ha Giang city. Quan Ba Pass offered us a majestic view of surrounding mountains & valleys, especially on its top point – Quang Ba Heaven Gate.We did a walk on proper steps to TV’station tower and extended our view to wonderful surrounding areas : Tam Son town, immense mountains & valleys and the Road of Happiness.

High Pass to reach Tam Son town

Driving up was hard but driving down the pass was even harder with our new-hired motorbike because the road was still wet and quite snaking around. We chose to go slowly with regular brakes to slow down the speed ( Remember check your brakes carefully when adventure this travel route by motorbikes). After the peak of 0.5 km, we had another top for viewing the symbolic beauty of Tam Son town, Quang Ba area with “ the Fairy Mountains : two twin mountains look like two breasts of a lady”, then head down to Tam Son town.

Having a break in a local café and filling some fuels, we proceeded to Yen Minh district where was at the higher location with tropical climate – where we could find layers of pine-tree forest everywhere along our driving journey.Without food along, we planned heading to Yen Minh town for a lunch. We reached Yen Minh town after 50km up-and-down excursion from Quan Ba district with better driving experiences and got a local lunch of roasted pork, fried fish & local vegetable soup.

After resting & lunching with energy, our diving journey was further up to Dong Van town ( 46km away with more awesome views of conical-hat-like mountains & massive valleys – dotted with local ethnic villages of Red Zao, Black H’Mong). On the way to Dong Van ( 15km far from), we stopped to visit the old palace of Vuong family – The King of Hmong people. The building was built of stone & woods in 20thcentury by Chinese & local Hmong workers – one of the highlighted attractions to visit in Ha Giang

Hagiang attractions- Vuong Palaces

28km away from Vuong Palace is Lung Cu Flag Tower – the Northernmost Point of Vietnam with big tower flying the Vietnamese national flag – an emblem of Vietnmese Sovereignty. We climbed up to the top point of 1700 mettes high, got a great view of the region & the China border with photos and felt the sacredness of national sovereignty  with a wish to achieve in our life.

In the late afternoon, we made our route of 22km to reach Dong Van town. Check- in our local homestay in Dong Van ancient town with typical ancient houses of Black Hmong. Having a talk with a local host about his old house & local cultures made our trip special memories to think about !

We had a dinner out in a local restaurant with some cups of famous local corn wine, walked around this quite town for a while and came back to cosy homestay for a good sleep with nice dreams of things to explore next day.

Day 2 : Dong Van market visit – motorbike adventure to Meo Vac town passing Ma Pi Leng Pass – Yen Minh – Quan Ba – Ha Giang. Night 3 : Overnight bus with soft-sleeper bed back to Hanoi.

Our day started in early morning with a nice walk to Dong Van ancient town and had breakfast with famous local Banh Cuon – steamed-rice pancake with soup. Delicious & different tastes from the same one in Hanoi. Continue strolling around to a weekly Dong Van market ,which takes place only on Sunday. It is a lively colorful market where local ethnics in the regions heading here to exchange their produces. We gathered on different sections of vegetables, farming tools, fruits, baskets, foods & animals. Ha Giang is an off-beaten-track destination so we did not witness here with any foreign tourists like Bac Ha market in Lao Cai province.Local ethnics go to market not only for good exchanges, but also for fun meeting friends, eating & drinking ! All we saw was an authentic local market with happy & friendly locals!

Ha Giang- Dong Van market

Back to the homestay, we said goodbye to our local host and continued our two-wheel motor journey to Meo Vac district – a very remote district of Ha Giang province. To reach Meo Vac, we must drive past “Ma Pi Leng Pass – The King of the Passes in Vietnam”. Read about this pass before, I felt how challenging it would be to overcome ! Actually, it was quite challenging but breathtaking with the landscapes. We stopped and stopped continuously for amazing photos of far mountains, immense valleys & symbolic Nho Que river gently runing along mountain foots. I had to admit that this was the most breathtaking beauty I had seen in my life – under the beautiful sunny weather. With many stops between, so we felt nothing with the challenges of Ma Pi Leng Pass any more and then decended down to Meo Vac town to attend a local Sunday market of the region. We were so impressive with both Dong Van & Meo Vac Markets for their cultural shows of local ethnics & typical local products selling here – interesting events to attend on your trips to this less touristic highlands.

After trying a local dish of Men Men made of corn, we journeyed to Yen Minh in another route with the same up & down winding & narrow road like M letter.Have a lunch in Yen Minh, then decended down to Ha Giang city.We finished our motorbike adventure at Ha Giang city around 5h00 p.m and got a room from Ms Giang – motorbike renter for a shower & refreshment.Having an early dinner & catching a soft-sleeper bed Cau Me bus at 8h15 p.m back to Hanoi. We slept well on the bus till 3h00 a.m arriving in Hanoi bus station. We ended our Ha Giang adventure trip 2 days/ 3 nights in a taxi home with unforgetable experiences ! See you again spectacular Ha Giang landscapes.
